It can also cause itchy eyes and sinus problems, often mistaken for allergies. Information on mold and moisture in your home, including health effects and symptoms, can be found at MN Department of Health. The most important step in solving a mold problem is to identify and correct the moisture SOURCES that allowed the growth in the first place.

The University of Minnesota Extension Service has an excellent publication entitled "Moisture in Basements: Causes and Solutions", which can be found under the LINKS tab to the left of this page. It is complete with descriptions and illustrations of the most common sources of basement water problems, as well as steps to correct them. If you plan to finish your basement, one very important (and often over-looked) step is to place a VAPOR BARRIER/RETARDER over the interior walls. This publication describes our method of installing an interior drain tile system, complete with vapor barrier.
